WhatsApp consistently adds new features, putting it well ahead of its competitors. WhatsApp has recently added voice-based chat rooms, groups, established Communities, and Channels to its list of services.

The Meta-owned instant messaging service was said to be working on a feature that would let customers set a unique nickname for their account instead of sharing their phone number in May.

A beta version of WhatsApp for Android now demonstrates more progress on this functionality by enabling username searches.

Although I was unable to observe it on my smartphone running WhatsApp beta version 2.23.25.20, WABetaInfo saw this change on version 2.23.25.19 of the chat app for Android.

The only obvious change in this case is the addition of the username to the search box at the top, which appears between the words name and number. However, the extra word does make the search area a bit crowded.

Once publicly available, usernames will be optional for account holders and will not remove phone numbers; instead, individuals will have the freedom to remove them whenever they like. This is according to WABI.
