With $162 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada, Barbie’s record-breaking opening weekend in theatres exceeded early projections, according to distributor Warner Bros.
The final weekend box office for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie movie was slightly higher than the studio’s Sunday forecast of $155 million.
Based on domestic opening weekend sales, Barbie is the top film of the year, surpassing the $146.4 million total for its April release. The Super Mario Bros. film.
The Mattel Inc. doll was reimagined by director Greta Gerwig, who also contributed $194.3 million in 63 foreign territories for a $356.3 million worldwide opening.
In the box office competition known as “Barbenheimer,” Barbie competed against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer’s final figures also increased. From Friday through Sunday, the documentary about how the atomic bomb was made made $82.4 million in the United States and Canada, above the prior prediction of $80.5 million.
Oppenheimer made roughly $98.0 million in 78 foreign countries for total worldwide revenue of $180.4 million.
Both films exceeded expectations, assisting in the fourth time in history that the US and Canadian box office exceeded $300 million.
