Malala Yousafzai, the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient, is no stranger to making history. However, her interview with British Vogue revealed that underlying it all, Malala is a young girl who, like you and me, is confused about life and her future.

The following are some of the more intriguing takeaways from her interview.

Marriage may not be on the horizon.

Malala’s thoughts on marriage may surprise some, but most likely not. As is the case with the majority of young people, she is sceptical of the institution.

She discussed how her friends were all finding relationships, but she was unsure of her desires. “You know how everyone shares their love stories on social media, and you become concerned… Whether or not you can trust someone, [and] how can you be certain.”

Malala’s parents married in a “planned love marriage,” but she is unsure about marriage.

“I’m still perplexed as to why people are compelled to marry. If you want someone in your life, why must you sign marriage papers? Why can’t it just be a partnership?”

As is the case with most Pakistani mothers, hers is appropriately shocked by her daughter’s ideas. “My mother is all, ‘Do not say anything like that! You must marry; marriage is lovely’, “Malala stated.

However, while Malala was previously highly anti-marriage, she has recognised that she is still developing and that our beliefs change as we do. This was, we believe, the most relatable statement she made during her interview, given that most young people nowadays struggle with the concept of marriage. They’re challenging ideas that have been pounded into their heads for years, and Malala, at 23, is at the zenith of those doubts.

Nobody has it all figured out, and it’s reassuring to know that someone who appears to have it all together is just as puzzled as we are.

Mathira expressed her thoughts in-depth on her Instagram story.
