Neelum is one of Azaad Kashmir’s finest valleys with several rivers, freshwater streams, lush green forests and a river. However, even in a place as lovely as Neelum Valley, the litter-averse Pakistanis ensure that it remains clean and green.
Throughout history, awareness campaigns about littering and proper garbage disposal have been hammered home via media campaigns. Indeed, they are printed on the packs and wrappers as well. Litter would be thrown anywhere, conveniently, rather than seeking out a nearby dustbin. Individuals shamelessly forget their social responsibilities.
Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram addressed the elephant in the room during his recent visit to the Neelum Valley. Akram shared a vital video message via Twitter.
“Apologies to the Karachi people,” read the caption. “It appears as though we as a nation must work cooperatively to keep our country clean; it is our sole responsibility and obligation, so let us give it a try. There will be no more excuses.”
“I would like to apologize to Karachiites for constantly calling them out for littering the city,” the former cricketer says in a video message. “However, I was mistaken, and I apologize. Because everyone is identicals\, if you look behind me, you’ll see this lovely river.”
“Look at the lying pile of litter,” Akram says, pointing to the river.
While our society speaks rhetorically about cleanliness, its practical application has always been lacking. A cursory examination reveals how insensitive our culture has become toward cleanliness and hygiene. In public spaces, dustbins are uncommon. The installation of dustbins does not imply that they will be used properly. Instead, people prefer to discard their garbage outside.
Garbage belongs in the trash can and should not be thrown anywhere. Neelum Valley is awe-inspiring in its beauty. It is an excellent tourist destination. It’s genuinely heartbreaking to see not only tourists but also locals discard trash in the river.
