The incident in Pahalgam is truly tragic. However, India’s immediate and aggressive response towards Pakistan without presenting any evidence is unfortunate and regrettable. As a major regional power, India should act with a sense of responsibility and restraint. It is true that Pakistan has a problematic track record when it comes to handling such incidents, which makes it difficult to avoid suspicion. Still, from what is apparent, it does not seem that state actors from Pakistan were involved in this particular incident.
Given Pakistan’s past, it is understandable that future incidents will also draw scrutiny. However, a more responsible approach from India would have been to first share concrete evidence of Pakistan’s involvement—if any—with both Pakistan and the international community. Moreover, India could have given Pakistan a window of two to three days to investigate and take action against any non-state actors found to be involved. Had Pakistan failed to respond, only then would India have been justified in taking stern measures.
Unfortunately, India’s arrogance seems to be growing unchecked. It appears as though India sees Pakistan as another Bhutan or Nepal—a miscalculation. While it’s true that Pakistan is facing serious economic challenges and is struggling even with basic resources, nations—no matter how weak—do not bow down. In Pakistan’s case, factors like national pride, honor, self-respect, and its Islamic identity play an even greater role in shaping public and state response.
Therefore, India’s threats may end up backfiring. Pakistan must respond firmly and not show any signs of weakness. At the same time, it should act responsibly and transparently to ensure that no non-state actors from its territory are involved in activities that harm peace and stability in the region.
