President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump clashed in the first US presidential debate of the campaign season. Held in Atlanta and broadcast by CNN, the debate was expected to focus on immigration, jobs, inflation, and the candidates’ ages. However, the primary spotlight fell on Biden’s ability to contend in the upcoming election.

The debate, lasting 90 minutes, quickly turned challenging for Biden. He struggled to articulate his points and froze several times, most notably during a discussion on the economy. His inability to recall key statistics about job creation, drug cost caps, and insulin prices—the cornerstones of his reelection campaign—was glaring. This faltering performance has stirred concerns among Democrats, with some questioning whether Biden should continue his campaign.

Trump, on the other hand, was aggressive and assertive, seizing the opportunity to dominate the debate stage. His performance, though criticized by some for being laden with inaccuracies, was seen as energetic and commanding. Supporters of Trump quickly declared him the debate’s decisive winner, citing Biden’s struggles as evidence of his unsuitability for another term.

The response from Biden’s camp was swift, attributing his subpar performance to a cold. However, this explanation did little to quell the unease among Democrats. Rosemarie DeAngelus, a Democrat from South Portland, Maine, expressed disappointment, noting that Biden lacked the necessary vigor and spark. In contrast, she acknowledged Trump’s apparent vitality, despite accusing him of dishonesty.

Despite his moments of hesitation, Biden did not hold back in his critiques of Trump. He labeled Trump an “alley cat with no morals,” a “whiner” over election fraud claims, accused him of personal scandals, and called him a “sucker” for attacking his son, Hunter Biden.
