Former President Donald Trump has proposed granting automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. This statement was made during an interview posted on Thursday, highlighting a significant shift in his approach to immigration as he campaigns for a return to the White House in 2024.
Trump, known for his stringent immigration policies and rhetoric, made the announcement during a podcast with venture capitalists and tech investors called the “All-In.” When asked about plans to import the “best and brightest” talent, Trump outlined his vision for supporting foreign graduates. “What I want to do and what I will do is you graduate from a college; I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too, anybody graduates from a college. You go there for two years or four years,” he stated, pledging to implement this policy on his first day back in office.
Immigration has been a cornerstone of Trump’s political identity, characterized by his efforts to curtail both illegal and legal immigration. His administration was marked by controversial measures such as the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order, which sought to prioritize highly skilled and highly paid business visa applicants to protect American jobs. Trump’s new proposal represents a dramatic shift, suggesting a more inclusive approach to legal immigration by providing a pathway to citizenship for potentially hundreds of thousands of foreign graduates.
Despite this recent proposal, Trump’s previous statements and policies have often painted immigrants in a negative light. He has blamed undocumented immigrants for crime, job losses, and strain on government resources. Trump has also promised to conduct the largest deportation operation in U.S. history if re-elected, a pledge consistent with his hardline stance on illegal immigration.
However, Trump and his supporters frequently assert a distinction between illegal and legal immigration. Even so, his administration proposed restrictions on legal immigration avenues such as family-based visas and the visa lottery program. He has also criticized the H1-B visa program, commonly used by tech companies to hire foreign workers temporarily, as a means for companies to employ foreign talent at lower wages.
The proposal to grant green cards to foreign graduates marks a notable pivot in Trump’s immigration policy, signaling a potential openness to legal immigration and recognition of the value that foreign graduates bring to the U.S. economy. This policy could facilitate the retention of highly educated individuals trained in American institutions, addressing talent shortages in critical sectors.
