Bank of Punjab (BOP) and Karandaaz Pakistan have joined hands in a groundbreaking alliance, aimed at transforming Pakistan’s agriculture sector through the Digital Financing for Agriculture (DFA) Challenge 2023. The strategic partnership, sealed on April 1, 2024, marks the commencement of an innovative initiative focused on enhancing digital agriculture loans and promoting financial inclusion nationwide.
The agreement signing ceremony, held at Islamabad’s prestigious Marriott Hotel, witnessed the participation of key figures including Mr. Zafar Masud, President & CEO of The Bank of Punjab, and Mr. Waqas ul Hassan, CEO of Karandaaz Pakistan. Notable attendees also included Mr. Sharjeel Murtaza, Director DFS Karandaaz, Mr. Asif Riaz, Group Head Consumer Banking, Mr. Nadeem Khanzada, Senior Joint Director of SBP, and Mr. Qasim Javed, representing Techlogix, alongside other senior management figures from BOP, Karandaaz, and the Agri and Fintech sectors.
Mr. Zafar Masud, emphasizing the collaboration’s goal to overcome financial challenges faced by farmers, expressed confidence in the initiative’s ability to enhance productivity and offer collateral-free financing. Leveraging innovative solutions such as real-time loan disbursement based on predictive AI assessments, the initiative aims to empower farmers nationwide, fostering resilience and prosperity. Mr. Masud extended his gratitude to Karandaaz Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan, Techlogix, and all stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Mr. Waqas ul Hassan, CEO of Karandaaz Pakistan, hailed the collaboration as a significant opportunity to address farmers’ access-to-credit challenges, emphasizing banks’ suitability as partners in this endeavor. He highlighted the potential to increase agricultural value chain productivity through digital inclusion of small farmers.
Mr. Masud underscored the role of Karandaaz’s Digital Agriculture Finance Challenge 2023 in driving innovation. The collaboration aims to provide digitally processed loans for crops, livestock, and dairy, amounting to approximately Rs 5 billion. This initiative, supported by a Rs 50 million grant, aims to promote sustainability, innovation, and productivity through advisory services and digitalization. Partnering with Techlogix for their Digital Platform and the country’s top AgriTechs for agronomy scores and advisory, BOP and Karandaaz are poised to revolutionize agricultural financing, benefiting farming communities across Pakistan.
The Director of Digital Financial Services (DFS) at Karandaaz elaborated on the partnership’s objectives, aiming to establish a comprehensive digital lending platform. This platform will feature a dynamic credit scorecard complemented by instant approval and disbursement mechanisms, facilitating timely access to finance for smallholder farmers nationwide.
