Renowned ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, whose soulful voice resonated with themes of love and heartache in iconic songs like “Chitthi Ayee Hai” and “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein,” passed away on Monday at the age of 72. The news of his demise has left the nation mourning the loss of a prolific artist. The funeral, scheduled for Tuesday in Mumbai, will see a gathering of celebrities, friends, and family coming together to pay their final tributes.
Pankaj Udhas, who also made a significant impact as a playback singer in Hindi films such as “Dayavan,” “Naam,” “Saajan,” and “Mohra,” breathed his last around 11 am at the Breach Candy Hospital after battling a prolonged illness. His daughter Nayaab shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, stating, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.”
The Breach Candy Hospital Trust, expressing condolences, remarked in a note, “This is not only a personal loss, but the whole nation has lost a prolific singer and a great human being.”
The last rites of the ghazal maestro, who reached the pinnacle of his career in the 1990s, will take place on Tuesday. Pankaj Udhas is survived by his wife Farida and daughters Reva and Nayaab.
As the final farewell approaches, the music fraternity, along with fans and admirers, anticipates an emotional gathering at the funeral.
