Santa Clara, California – In a tragic incident, 27-year-old Google employee Liren Chen has been taken into custody after allegedly killing his wife, Xuanyi Yu, a fellow Google engineer. The grim discovery was made on January 16 at their residence on Valley Way.
Police responded to a welfare call around 11 am on the mentioned date, prompted by a friend of Chen who expressed concern about the couple. The friend reported that Chen was unresponsive to calls and refused to answer the door. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Chen kneeling outside a bedroom, seemingly motionless with his hands in the air and a blank stare.
Chen was observed to be “spattered with blood” and had an “extremely swollen and purple arm.” The lifeless body of Xuanyi Yu was discovered in the bedroom, directly behind where Chen had been standing. According to the Santa Clara District Attorney, Yu suffered severe blunt force injuries to her head.
The district attorney’s office reported that Chen’s right hand showed signs of swelling and discoloration, with blood on his clothing, legs, arms, and hands, along with scratches on his arm.
Property records indicate that the couple purchased their home at 714 Valley Way for $2.05 million in April 2023. Both individuals had studied at Tsinghua University in China and later at the University of California San Diego.
