Police reports from Kenya on Arshad Sharif’s passing
Sharif was fatally shot by police on October 23 while he was travelling to Nairobi, Kenya, according to information from the Kenyan police. Officers from the paramilitary division of the Kenya Police Service opened fire on the car after Sharif and his brother reportedly drove over a security roadblock. A total of nine shots were fired, one of which struck Sharif in the back of the head. Following claims of a car theft and child abduction, police blocked the route with tiny stones. Kenya’s Independent Police Oversight Authority immediately began an investigation after Kenyan officials claimed the death was an accident and expressed remorse over the tragedy.
Mother of Arshad Sharif petitions Supreme Court
Arshad Sharif’s mother has moved the Supreme Court, asking it to order the special Joint inquiry Team (JIT) looking into her son’s slaying in October of last year to include PTI Chairman Imran Khan and four other persons in the inquiry. His mother claimed in an application that five individuals who “have been found claiming about the persons who are involved in the conspiracy and the execution of the murder” “need to be joined in the investigation to collect evidence against the real perpetrators” She has identified Imran as someone who must participate in the investigation, along with PTI officials Faisal Vawda and Murad Saeed, journalist Imran Riaz Khan, whose whereabouts are now unknown, and ARY CEO Salman Iqbal.
Previous findings of the Arshad Sharif murder investigation
A two-person fact-finding team made up of Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) personnel came to the conclusion that Sharif’s death was a “planned targeted assassination” that allegedly included “transnational characters” in December of last year. Additionally, it had said that the court would not become involved with the probe. The bench had stated, “The court is allowing the JIT leeway for inquiry and the case should be handled transparently as the court is extremely serious about transparent investigations.
Murad Saeed and Arshad Sharif of the PTI
Murad Saeed, the head of the PTI, made various claims regarding the assassination of Arshad Sharif and the people and circumstances involved. Murad Saeed stated in a press conference in November 2022 that he had all the proof of what occurred to Mr. Sharif during the final seven months of his life. Mr. Sharif had threatened him, filed FIRs against him, and compelled him to relocate to Kenya. He had earlier stated that he would provide the material to the panel if it were established by the chief justice at the mother of the late journalist’s request. In accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives, the federal government established the five-member SJIT. Officers from the Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence, FIA, and IB make up the squad, which is led by Islamabad DIG Headquarter Awais Ahmad. A fact-finding committee comprised of FIA and IB officers, established by the federal government to look into the murder, had earlier called Mr. Saeed for questioning.
