Mir Adda, five, chose a ‘Barbie dress,’ wore a crown, and was excitedly calling for family to cut her brother’s birthday cake, just minutes before a leopard abducted her from on the lawn of her home on the outskirts of the city, in a tragic episode demonstrating human-animal conflict caused by increasing forest destruction. The Mir house at Om Pura, a neighbourhood just outside the city boundaries in Budgam’s core area, became the focal point of interest as mourners swarmed the household to express their condolences to Adda’s family.

“Adda had returned from her maternal family home in celebration of her younger brother Ali’s seventh birthday. She walked upstairs and changed into her favourite ‘Barbie dress’ for the occasion, complete with princess crown, before entering the garden to ask her grandfather to finish his tea in preparation for the cake cutting “, Aijaj Ahmed, her maternal uncle, stated. Adda’s heart-wrenching shrieks punctured the calm evening of June 3 a few minutes later. As her family members assisted by neighbours and forest officials, what ensued was a futile exercise, discovered only blood smears and a doll she was clutching.

The following day, Adda’s body pieces were retrieved from an adjacent nursery converted into a forest, leaving a bereaved family behind. They said a sorrowful farewell to her on Saturday as she was laid to rest, and people reminisced about her brightness and wit. Her relatives, who were unable to visit owing to Covid-19 limitations, expressed their grief on Twitter.

“She called herself Adda rani. I’ll never forget her laughter or the way she ran. What a disaster! ” Sana Fazili, who lived in the same neighbourhood as the incident, tweeted about it. Additionally, she released a video of Adda imitating a current social media craze. “Yeh, mein hoon….yeh, meri party ho Rahi hai,” he replied.

Users on Twitter and other social media platforms expressed their sympathy for Adda, with one writing, “Heaven must be a wonderful place now that it has you Adda…” The little girl’s parents are still in disbelief. This is their family’s second loss, as Adda’s grandmother died earlier this year. Adda’s death, a student at DPS School in Srinagar, resulted in suspensions within the Forest Department and compelled the Jammu and Kashmir authorities to address the Ompura locality’s worries about wild animals.

“She was an excellent young lady, always lively and smiling. However, what happened to her should not occur to anybody else “Ahmed, inconsolable, stated. Muddasir, her father, had returned from Thailand last year in the aftermath of the Covid outbreak.

Additionally, her school offered condolences and issued a note that read, “We are grieved by the young one’s suffering and death, and we stand in sadness and solidarity with the family. We pray for the departed soul’s ultimate rest and for the healing of those she leaves behind, devastated and inconsolable.” The sighting of wild creatures was captured on camera, but no one intervened, according to Ahmed, who, along with other neighbours, blamed the Forest Department for the tragedy. The Ompura area is close to a 20-acre nursery administered by the Social Forestry Department.

“The nursery’s objective was to raise saplings that could eventually be put in the forest region. However, they neglected the nursery, and it has devolved into a forest.” They began cutting trees and clearing bushes following her death, which they should have done years ago. We believe the child’s death is a direct result of the Forest Department’s activities. This nursery is surrounded by human living and contains wild animals that walk freely, “As Ahmed stated.
