In a joint statement, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and filmmaker Kiran Rao announced their divorce after 15 years of marriage. According to the couple, they will co-parent their kid, Azad Rao Khan.
Khan and Rao, both 56, met on the filming of Khan’s 2001 blockbuster film Lagaan. In December 2005, the two married. In December 2011, they welcomed their son Azad Rao Khan into the world.
“Over these 15 years, we’ve shared a lifetime’s worth of experiences, joy, and laughter, and our relationship has only gotten stronger in terms of trust, respect, and love. Now, we’d like to begin a new chapter in our life — not as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family members for one another.” Saturday morning, the statement was received.
“We began a planned separation several months ago and now feel comfortable formalizing our arrangement of living separately but sharing our lives in the same manner an extended family does,” the statement stated. Additionally, the two said that they would continue to work for their non-governmental organization, Paani Foundation. Additionally, they will continue to collaborate on films and other professional endeavors.
‘The beginning of a new journey.’
“A special thanks to our family and friends for their unwavering support and understanding regarding this progression in our relationship, without whom we would not have felt as confident in taking this leap,” the statement continued. “We ask for well wishes and blessings from our well-wishers and hope that you, like us, will view this divorce as the beginning of a new journey.”
