It was shocking news for Messi and Barcelona fans alike, as the two sides agreed to extend the contract.

However, due to financial constraints, things spiraled out of control, and they violated the agreement. As a result, after 21 years with Catalan, Lionel Messi has become a free agent.

Lionel Messi is the club’s all-time leading scorer, appearing in nearly 778 matches and  scoring 672 goals across all competitions. However, Lionel Messi was far from unstoppable, as evidenced by the fact that he also won this year’s Copa America title for his country, the only international trophy missing from his trophy shelf.

As everyone predicted after the previous season, Messi has already indicated  that he may leave Barcelona. However, Barcelona reached an agreement and terms to retain their star player. It was almost a done deal; headlines stated that Messi would not leave Barcelona.

It was all but sure that Lionel Messi would sign a five-year contract with a 50% salary cut. Unfortunately, the

Catalan club was unable to proceed with this process due to its financial restructuring.

However, last night, Barcelona released an official statement stating that “despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi reaching an agreement and both parties expressing a clear intention to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen due to financial and structural constraints (Spanish La Liga regulations).”

Additionally, a Barca spokesperson stated, “As a result of this situation, Messi will be leaving FC Barcelona.” Both parties express profound regret that the player’s and the club’s wishes will ultimately be disappointed.
