Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, Imran Khan, has become a topic of national concern as reports of serious issues with his eyesight emerge. Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has assured that the former Prime Minister will be allowed to receive medical treatment abroad if necessary, emphasizing that the government is prioritizing his health.

Chaudhry clarified that the authorities have no personal enmity with Imran Khan and stated, “If the PTI founder agrees to be treated at Al-Shifa Hospital, we have no objection.” The minister confirmed that the government’s foremost concern is the PTI founder’s well-being, noting that he undergoes daily medical check-ups to monitor his condition.
Eye Concerns Highlighted
The urgency surrounding Imran Khan’s health came to light after a detailed report submitted to the court by Barrister Salman Safdar, following a visit to Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently held. According to Safdar’s report, the PTI leader experienced a sudden and complete loss of vision in his right eye.
“His treatment was started after sudden and complete end of his sight of the right eye,” the report states. Imran Khan reportedly told the lawyer that he can now see only 10 to 15 percent in that eye. The report also noted that jail officials did not initially take his complaints seriously.
According to the report, just a few months ago, Imran Khan’s eyesight in both eyes was normal. Over the last three to four months, he began experiencing blurred vision, which he repeatedly reported to Jail Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum, but no adequate action was taken.
Recommendations for Medical Attention
The report submitted by Barrister Salman Safdar emphasized that Imran Khan should be examined by top specialists, including Dr. Faisal Sultan and Dr. Asim Yousuf, and possibly other expert ophthalmologists. The lawyer recommended immediate attention to prevent further deterioration of his vision.
The report also highlighted the mental and emotional challenges of his solitary confinement. Imran Khan has limited access to television and other forms of engagement, prompting Safdar to recommend providing him with books and other reading material to support his mental well-being.
Court’s Role in Monitoring
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has actively intervened to ensure that Imran Khan’s rights are protected while in custody. The court allowed Barrister Salman Safdar to visit the PTI leader at Adiala Jail in the capacity of a judicial representative and commissioner. Safdar was appointed as “a friend of the court” to report on Imran Khan’s health and living conditions.
The Chief Justice gave strict instructions that Safdar should not face any obstacles during his visit. If any difficulty arises, the lawyer was instructed to immediately contact the Chief Justice’s personal staff officer. This step ensures transparency and accountability in monitoring the treatment and care of a political leader in custody.
Government’s Assurance
Following the report, the government has assured the public that Imran Khan will have access to medical care both within Pakistan and abroad if necessary. Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry reiterated that the health of the former Prime Minister is being taken seriously, and that proper medical facilities will be provided without delay.
This situation underscores the importance of timely medical attention and the responsibility of authorities to provide adequate care, especially for prisoners with serious health concerns. While political tensions exist, the emphasis on humane treatment reflects the judiciary’s oversight and the government’s commitment to health rights.
