Saudi Arabia Lifts Mahram Rule for Women: A New Era for Hajj Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has officially ended the long-standing rule that required women to be accompanied by a mahram (male guardian) to perform Hajj. This groundbreaking change allows women to undertake the spiritual journey independently — a move welcomed globally as a step toward inclusivity and empowerment.

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Religious Affairs, Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, confirmed the development while also unveiling several updates regarding Pakistan’s upcoming Hajj arrangements. One of the most notable announcements was the introduction of an installment payment plan starting in 2026, making it financially easier for families to plan for Hajj over time.

According to the minister, over 455,000 Pakistanis have already registered for the next pilgrimage. With such overwhelming interest, the government is pushing for an increased Hajj quota, up to 255,000 pilgrims, from the Saudi authorities for next year. If approved, this would allow even more Pakistanis to fulfill their religious obligation.

In addition to these changes, pilgrims can expect better facilities this year. Air-conditioned tents will be provided in Arafat, ensuring a more comfortable stay during one of the most physically demanding parts of the journey. These improvements are a result of continued cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia , a partnership that has strengthened over the years to better serve pilgrims.

The removal of the mahram requirement, especially, is a major step forward for women across the world. It reflects a broader push to make Hajj more accessible, safer, and convenient for all Muslims , regardless of gender.

As preparations gear up for next year’s pilgrimage, families across Pakistan now have more hope and flexibility to plan their journey to the Holy Land. With updated policies, financial support options, and improved facilities, the Hajj experience is becoming more inclusive and manageable for everyone.
