Chinese animation is taking the world by storm once again. The much-anticipated English-language release of Ne Zha 2, the sequel to the 2019 hit Ne Zha, is officially set to hit theaters across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on August 22, according to distribution companies CMC Pictures and A24.

Directed by acclaimed Chinese animator Jiaozi, Ne Zha 2 has already made cinematic history. Released in January this year, the mythological fantasy film pulled in a staggering 12.3 billion yuan ($1.71 billion) at the global box office. It has now overtaken Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film in the world and currently stands as the eighth highest-grossing movie of all time.

The film, rooted in classic Chinese mythology, continues the tale of Ne Zha, a rebellious young boy born with immense, uncontrollable powers. Feared by the gods but loved by his mortal parents, Ne Zha’s journey explores themes of identity, fate, and self-acceptance. The sequel dives deeper into this emotional and visually stunning universe, combining heartfelt storytelling with breathtaking animation that rivals any Hollywood production.

One of the biggest announcements surrounding the English release is the involvement of Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, who joins the cast in an undisclosed role. In a statement, Yeoh expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m honoured to be part of Ne Zha 2, a landmark in Chinese animation and a powerful reminder of how universal our stories can be.” Her addition brings an extra layer of star power to an already record-breaking film.

While the full English voice cast hasn’t been revealed yet, anticipation is high. Fans of both Eastern and Western animation are eager to see how the dubbed version will translate the rich storytelling and cultural nuances of the original.

Ne Zha 2 isn’t just a film, it’s a cultural milestone. It proves that stories from any corner of the world can strike a universal chord when told with passion, talent, and heart. For those who missed it in its original release, this August offers a perfect opportunity to experience the magic in a whole new way, this time, in English.
